The group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the flyswatter in chief to try taking a more humane attitude the next time he's bedeviled by a fly in the White House.

PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside.

"We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals."

During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood.

"Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead.

"Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker."

Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses.

Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't."

Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter.

A British man had to be rushed to a hospital emergency room after attempting to circumcise himself with nail clippers, the Telegraph reported Tuesday.

The unnamed young man was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, where he had the wound cleaned and disinfected.

He was kept in the hospital for observation.

"This is something we would advise men never to attempt," a medic told the Telegraph. "The results can be quite horrific and long-lasting and have quite an affect on a man's sexual performance. Using a pair of nail clippers must have caused excruciating pain, even if he had had a few drinks beforehand."

A billboard erected in New Zealand to remind motorists to change their driving to match weather conditions has a child's face that bleeds when it rains. Better yet, it ran during Easter and the Jewish holiday of Passover.

The bleeding billboard was created to promote a safe driving campaign over the Easter and Passover holiday in which there'd been a sickening amount of fatal accidents in previous years especially in rainy conditions. Advertising agency, Colenso BBDO was tasked with the creation of the billboard that, when it rains, bleeds profusely from the child's face. Somewhat disturbing? Yes. Potentially culturally insensitive? Sure, maybe to Egyptians and Christians. But we're pretty sure we'd get the message.

We're not the only ones. Since the billboard was erected, there's been a 0% death rate. That's a number they're happy to live with, we're sure.

Husband, wife win at pit spitting in US

A husband and wife are tops at this year's International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship.
Rick "Pellet Gun" Krause, of Tuba City, Arizona spit for the win Saturday at the contest, held in the state of Michigan. In somewhat windy conditions, he shot a pit 48 feet and half an inch (14.75 meters).

Organizers say his wife Marlene took first place in the women's contest, spitting a pit 36 feet, 3 inches (11.8 centimeters).

The Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm just north of the Indiana border hosts the event. Orchard owner Herb Teichman launched the competition as a lark 36 years ago, but it now attracts competitors from the United States and beyond.

Robbers strip 300 graves at historic black Chicago cemetery

CHICAGO (AFP) – Grave robbers stripped at least 300 plots at a historic black cemetery outside Chicago, dumped many of the bodies and then resold the plots for a profit, officials said Thursday.

The years-long scheme was carried out by the cemetery's manager and three gravediggers who sold the "used" graves so they could pocket the fees rather than pass them along to the Arizona-based owners.

"This was not done in a very delicate way," Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart said at a press conference.

"They would excavate a grave, excavate the entire site and then they would proceed to dump the remains wherever they found a place to do it in the back of the cemetery."

They would also sometimes leave the remains in the grave and "pound them down and put someone else on top," Dart said.

Couple With 16 Kids Found Murdered In Fla. Home
Police: Foster Parents Killed While 8 Children SleptPENSACOLA, Fla. (CBS) ―

Investigators asked the public to be on the lookout Friday for a red van they believe carried three men involved in the deaths of a Florida Panhandle couple who were shot in their rural home while eight of their children slept.

Surveillance cameras showed the van at the home of Byrd and Melanie Billings in Beulah, a rural area west of Pensacola near the Alabama border, Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said. The children were unharmed.

The sheriff's office released an enhanced but still grainy photograph of a red, 15-passenger van dating to the late 70s or early 80s.

Morgan said investigators did not know who killed the wealthy couple known for adopting children with developmental disabilities, many born to drug-addicted mothers.

Investigators are also awaiting autopsy results on the couple to learn more about the killings, he added.

Morgan said eight of the children, ages 8 to 14, were in the home when the couple was killed Thursday evening. A woman who lives in an outlying building and helps care for the children called emergency dispatchers from the home.

Swearing Makes Pain More Tolerable
http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090712/sc_livescience/swearingmakespainmoretolerable

That muttered curse word that reflexively comes out when you stub your toe could actually make it easier to bear the throbbing pain, a new study suggests.

Swearing is a common response to pain, but no previous research has connected the uttering of an expletive to the actual physical experience of pain.

"Swearing has been around for centuries and is an almost universal human linguistic phenomenon," said Richard Stephens of Keele University in England and one of the authors of the new study. "It taps into emotional brain centers and appears to arise in the right brain, whereas most language production occurs in the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain."

Stephens and his fellow Keele researchers John Atkins and Andrew Kingston sought to test how swearing would affect an individual's tolerance to pain. Because swearing often has an exaggerating effect that can overstate the severity of pain, the team thought that swearing would lessen a person's tolerance.

As it turned out, the opposite seems to be true.

The researchers enlisted 64 undergraduate volunteers and had them submerge their hand in a tub of ice water for as long as possible while repeating a swear word of their choice. The experiment was then repeated with the volunteer repeating a more common word that they would use to describe a table.

Contrary to what the researcher expected, the volunteers kept their hands submerged longer while repeating the swear word.

The researchers think that the increase in pain tolerance occurs because swearing triggers the body's natural "fight-or-flight" response. Stephens and his colleagues suggest that swearing may increase aggression (seen in accelerated heart rates), which downplays weakness to appear stronger or more macho.

"Our research shows one potential reason why swearing developed and why it persists," Stephens said.

I call it bs. Sounds like they are making an excuse for people to swear.

A New Hampshire man was shocked to learn that when he purchased pack of cigarettes he also got charged $23,148,855,308,184,500, or more than $23 quadrillion — a number that rivals that of the national debt.

Josh Muszynski swiped his debit card at a gas station to buy a pack of cigarettes and a few hours later noticed the exorbitant charge when he checked his account on the Internet, WMUR-TV reported.

"I thought my card had been compromised. I thought somebody had bought Europe with my credit card," Muszynski told the station. "It was very concerning."

Muszynski told WMUR-TV that he spent two hours on the phone with Bank of America trying to sort out the string of numbers — and the $15 overdraft fee — but the company couldn't explain what exactly happened.

"She just tried to assure me that everything would be fixed, and I couldn't see something like that being fixed," Muszynski said.

The bank corrected the error the next day.

Man Uses Chainsaw to Fight Off 150lb Attacking Mountain Lion

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,533420,00.html?test=latestnews

CODY, Wyoming — A Colorado man used a chain saw to fight off a mountain lion that attacked him during a camping trip with his wife and two toddlers in northwestern Wyoming.

The adult male lion, described as emaciated and showing other signs of starvation, was later killed by wildlife officials after it attacked a dog brought in to track it.

Dustin Britton, a 32-year-old mechanic and ex-Marine from Windsor, Colo., said he was alone cutting firewood about 100 feet from his campsite in the Shoshone National Forest when he saw the 100-pound lion staring at him from some bushes.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Britton said he raised his 18-inch chain saw and met the lion head-on as it pounced — a collision he described as feeling like a grown man running directly into him.

"It batted me three or four times with its front paws, and as quick as I hit it with that saw, it just turned away," he said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Wildlife officials said Sunday evening's attack about 27 miles west of Cody was highly unusual because mountain lions are reclusive by nature. Only eight cases of mountain lions acting aggressively toward humans have been documented in Wyoming over the last decade.

Given the animal's low body weight — male lions in Wyoming typically weigh 140 to 150 pounds — it may have attacked Britton out of desperation, said Mark Bruscino, a Wyoming Fish and Game biologist who responded to the incident.

"Starvation is a strong motivator for any animal in chasing a meal," he said.

It was uncertain why it was starving. Britton's campsite, near the North Fork of the Shoshone River, was in an area heavily populated by the lion's typical prey — elk, deer and bighorn sheep.

Officials suspect disease may have played a role in the attack.

The wounded animal retreated after Britton inflicted a six- to eight-inch gash on the lion's shoulder, leaving him with only a small puncture wound on his forearm.

"You would think if you hit an animal with a chain saw it would dig right in," he said. "I might as well have hit it with a hockey stick."

WINTER PARK, Fla. - A Florida dentist is being sued for allegedly dropping tools down the throat of an elderly patient - twice.

Relatives of 90-year-old Charles Gaal Jr. recently filed the suit in circuit court accusing Dr. Wesley Meyers of negligence. An answering message at Meyers' office in Winter Park said Saturday that he was on vacation. He did not reply to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

The lawsuit says the doctor dropped an "implant screwdriver tool" in 2006 and a "mini-wrench" in 2007.
The suit also says Gaal underwent several medical procedures to remove the tools but never fully recovered. He died in 2007.

Meyers was fined $17,000 by the state a year later. The dentist was found negligent in a settlement.

Wienermobile Penetrates Wisconsin Home

http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/oscar-mayer-wienermobile-drives-into-wisconsin-house.html

Stories about people having their vehicles in the wrong gear and inadvertently driving in the wrong direction aren't all that uncommon or newsworthy, but not every misguided vehicle is the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile.

It seems a 22-year-old female driver took a wrong turn and ended up on a dead-end street in Mount Pleasant, Wis., about 35 miles south of Milwaukee, just before noon Friday.

While trying to turn the giant wiener around in a driveway, the driver said she thought she was reversing but instead went forward and crashed the 27-foot frank into the deck and garage of a home.

No one was in the house and no one was injured.

Oscar Mayer spokeswoman Sydney Lindner apologized for any inconvenience to the home owner and said the company will work with insurance companies to fix the damage to the house and vehicle.

I know this isn't weird new, it's just super sad. I'm sure a lot of you have heard about the 4 young boys that raped an 8 year old girl. The saddest part of it is that her family has disowned her because of it!

Oldest boy in assault of girl to be tried as adult
Jul. 23, 2009 04:00 PM

Prosecutors filed sexual assault charges against four boys ages 9 to 14, officials said Thursday, alleging they brutally attacked an 8-year-old girl after luring her to a shed with chewing gum.

Police said the girl's parents criticized her after the violence, blaming her for bringing shame on the family. All five children are refugees from the West African nation of Liberia.

The boys held the girl down while they took turns assaulting her, police said.
“She was brutally sexually assaulted for a period of about 10 to 15 minutes,” police Sgt. Andy Hill said, calling it one of the worst cases the department has investigated.

The 14-year-old boy was charged Wednesday as an adult with two counts of sexual assault and kidnapping, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said. He's being held without bond.

The other boys — ages 9, 10, and 13 — were charged as juveniles with sexual assault. The 10- and 13-year-old boys also were charged with kidnapping, the office said Thursday.

Authorities said the victim was in the care of Child Protective Services after her parents blamed her for the rapes and bringing shame to the family.

“The father told the case worker and an officer in her presence that he didn't want her back. He said Take her, I don't want her,'” Hill said.

Hill cited the family's background as the reason the family shunned the girl.

In many parts of Africa, women often are blamed for being raped for “enticing” men or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Girls who are raped often are shunned by their families.

In recent years, Liberia has made efforts to combat rape under the leadership of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who has sought to dispel the stigma associated with sexual assault by publicly acknowledging that she was herself the victim of attempted rape during the country's civil war.

Phoenix investigators said the boys lured the girl to an empty shed July 16 under the pretense of offering her chewing gum.

Officers responding to an emergency call reporting hysterical screams found the girl partially clothed and the boys running from the scene.

The boys were being held in a juvenile corrections facility.

“This is a deeply disturbing case that has gripped our community,” Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas said in a news release Thursday. “Our office will seek justice for the young victim in this heartrending situation.”

The girl's healing process will be particularly difficult, said Paul Penzone of Childhelp, which aids young victims of crime.

“These four boys used what was a ploy to entice her to a place where they could take advantage of her almost like a pack of wolves,” he said.

“And what's so disturbing beyond the initial crime is the fact that a child needs to have somewhere to feel safe, and you would think that would be in a home with her own family,” not in state custody, Penzone said.

Michael Jacksons fake nose is MISSING!

Michael Jackson wore a prosthetic nose, according a report -- and it was missing from his surgically mangled face as he lay in an LA morgue.

Left behind was a small, dark hole surrounded by bits of cartilage, Rolling Stone magazine said, citing witnesses who saw the King of Pop's body on the autopsy table.

Jackson, who was notoriously shy about his appearance, wore the prosthetic to mask the effects of decades of plastic surgery, according to the magazine, due to hit newsstands today.

Meanwhile, a Texas search warrant unsealed yesterday indicates that Jacko's doctor, Conrad Murray, is the target of a manslaughter probe into the singer's death.

The document authorized cops who searched the doctor's clinic and storage unit on Wednesday to look for "items constituting evidence of the offense of manslaughter that tend to show that Dr. Conrad Murray committed said criminal offense."

Murray was with Jackson when the singer went into cardiac arrest on June 25 after ingesting a cocktail of powerful drugs.

At the cardiologist's office, investigators took forensic images of his computer and seized documents, weight-loss pills and a tablet of clonazepam, a muscle relaxant.

"Whether or not it means that Dr. Conrad Murray is the center of the criminal probe would be a question for investigators," the doctor's spokeswoman, Miranda Sevcik, said of the warrant. With Post Wire Services
