death wobble
#1
hey all, i am now researching the death wobble my jeep has incurred. it happens at 35-45mph either slowing down or hitting a bump. i have seen a lot to look at but i would like to hear from anyone who has found a fix or what are the best places to look at for resolving this problem :'(

funny you posted this today, i actually just started having the same problem

usually its somewhere in your steering thats loose, id check all the bolts and make sure everything is tight like its suppose to be. Also can be caused by out of balance tires

Im sure others will have more input too as it happens to almost every jeep at least once

thanks chris, i should have looked to the next page there was a thread already posted and there are some good ideas there also. i want to cure this before i start to think about putting on a pro comp 3.5 lift. i will go to 33" tires when i need new ones. just taking baby steps right now.8|:red|

TRACKBAR, STEERING STABILIZER that all look at those FIRST......

We had serious death wobble in our Cherokee at speeds when we hit a bump. Turned out that the front lower control arms were at too drastic an angle; we bought and installed lowered control-arm brackets from R.E. That completely fixed the problem.

Oh, and all the other stuff listed here: checking for loose steering, tire balance, camber/castor, track bar, etc. were always in perfect condition, so that's what made us start looking at the geometry of the front end.

just check all the steering stuff, tracbar and tracbar mounts, suspension bolts and such. it really helps to have someone else help you and pinpiont stuff. bring it by and i could help you look at it if you like.

i think i fixed my problem. i did change the stablizer needed to be done any way worn toward the wheel and also had balenced and rotated tires. still had the problem just not as bad. then i pressured down my tires to 35psi instead of 45 and that did the trick. i have nitrogen in the tires so there is no real pressure change and such. right now it feels great with the pressures there.

replace the stabilizer shock, mine wears out pretty frequently cause the tires never stay balanced

People, replacing the steering stabilizer is not curing your death wobble. It's only masking the symptoms which is why you wear them out so fast.

Of course running 45 psi in the tires is pure insanity for our kinds of rigs. Most common issues are Un-balance tires, Worn trac bar bushings, loose trac bars. Go thru the entire front end and make sure everything is tight.

i ran into a really bad case of DW a few months ago. Changing the bushings on the track bar is what cured it. i also lowered the PSI in the tires a bit.
