Paul, Rob (my dad) and I took off for a weekend of Javelina hunting outside of Prescott in section 17a/b. While we may not have killed anything we did learn some great things about hunting them and had a good time in the snow.
My story: Took off early on Friday and set up camp for the weekend. My dad wasn't going to get off work till after 4pm so I wanted to make sure I wasn't setting up in the dark. After a quick run up and back, I grabbed the last of the camp supplies and guns, picked up my dad and made my way back up to camp. Paul took off from the west side a little before us and had his camp all set up by the time we got in.
As we stood around the fire talking about the plan for the weekend and where to look for the pigs it started to rain. We called it a night and crawled into bed. About midnight or so the rain picked up and continued through out the night.
Sat morning came early and the rain didn't stop. We headed over to the AZ game and fish area and checked in with the guys heading up the weekend. The ranger pulled us into his tent and set out some maps that mike would have been proud of. As we talked out the area we got hooked up with three guys that were up there to help new hunters like ourselves. We followed them out and they were kind enough to show us what to look for and looked for tracks with us.
No luck.
After we went back to camp my dad and I headed into town to get a hot lunch. About this time it started to snow... LOTS AND LOTS of snow.... My truck did fine and I even helped a guy out that slid off the road which turned into a big ordeal. Story for another time.
We made it back to camp to find out that our tent had almost collapsed. Paul saved us and cleared the snow away. Thanks again Paul!!! We also found out that the Game and Fish guys loaded up and headed home... Wimps.
We stuck it out another night to see if there would be a break in the weather and a chance to kill a pig. No such luck. Sunday it kept on snowing and we packed up and headed home.
All in all we had a great time camping and shooting the breeze with Paul. Hope to do it again.
Pics soon...
