All around rifle
#1
What would be your choice for an all around rifle? Something that can be used for hunting, durable enough to be tossed around, strong enough to reach out and touch someone at 300+ yards and priced under 2k?

Ive tossed around a few ideas in my head

The FNAR

Springfield Scout Squad

What about you?

30-06 is your best all round caliber for anything in Az but i prefer the 7 mag a little flatter shooting with plenty of knockdown power....Keep in mind when hunting no more than a 4 round magazine

do they make a 7mm semi auto? I wanted something I could swap in a high cap mag and take with me when we went out on camping trips down south for a little extra protection

Most people I know prefer a 30-30 or a 30-.06

If you need one size fits all, here you go.

A good semi-auto 30-06 would put you into a Remington 750. Comes in synthetic or wood furniture and your choice of a 18.5" carbine barrel (good for 300 yards) or 22" standard barrel (reaches out to 600 yards). If you plan on shooting 600 yards, opt for the 22" barrel. The Synthetic would be a good "beater gun", as the synthetic furniture will take a beating. It has rifled sights AND is drilled/tapped for a scope base. It comes with swivel studs, a 4+1 round detachable magazine, and is WELL under $2000. I see them at online gun shops for under $650. Triple-K makes a 10 round magazine for under $35.00.

OH, don't be temped to buy the older version Remington 7400, which was replaced by this 750. The 750 has an improved feeding system, swivel studs, and can handle higher power loads. It's not worth the $60 savings.

The FN and Springfield are nice guns, but they are special purpose rifles. The Springfield is too heavy for hunting and unless you're getting a national match version, even 300 yards will be a bit of a struggle. The FN can reach out to 300-600 yards, but it's a bit cumbersome for hunting. Both guns... you'll have difficulty finding a 5-round magazine for hunting. If you do, they tend to be pricey.

Personally, I would buy the Remington 750 in 30-06 for under $650 and spend around $400 for a good Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 or 5-20X44. Then, spend the extra $950 on a nice AR15 in .223rem , like the DSArms ZM4 for under $700 or a DPMS Panther AR10-style rifle in .308win for under $900.

That's my 2 cents. It's hard to find an all-purpose gun, unless it's modular. It's better to have multiple toys.. I mean, tools. :) Hell, why do you think I have SO MANY of them! http://www.higherground4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?3896-Gun-Porn-what-my-quot-Friend-quot-owns&p=45017#post45017

Thanks for the advice

I find out how much my work bonus will be today and then I will know exactly how much I can spend :)

Okay, thinking this over Im looking at getting a DPMS in .308

Initially just get a base version, then dress it up when extra money comes in

Thinking a 16" barrel for fun and longer 22 or 24 if I ever wanted to do some long distance shooting

Buds has them for 900ish and Ive seen around the same price on gunbroker

Are Magpul accessories worth the money?

Nice choice! It'll look bitchin hanging from rifle hooks attached to your jeep roll bars. Ha Ha.

I will be ordering one soon. I will probably get two uppers. One in 18" and one in 24" stainless. Swap and go!

Magpul make some nice stuff. I love their magazines. I use their stocks, as well.

Right away, you should get the JP Enterprises trigger/hammer spring kit. It will lighten the trigger pull without gunsmithing. It's an inexpensive $10 upgrade. With this upgrade, avoid bulk NATO ammo. The primers may be too hard to use this lighter spring set unless you also upgrade to a titanium firing pin.

As funds come in, consider finding a carbon fiber forend. It will drop the weight of this rifle by almost 1.5 pounds, thus making your rifle a 8 pound gun.

I found this one on Gunbroker. Not bad for $90.
