back country protection

What do you carry for protection while out hiking and back packing?

I always carry my little 9mm with me but I have no expectations of it stopping a bear or elk. I don't think the 9 would have enough velocity to penetrate far enough to hit any vital organs

I know the chances of running into a bear are slim, but its already happened to at least one of us

Ive looked at the glock 20, taurus tracker .44 mag and the ruger alaskan

What would be your choice? My criteria is cheap, light and durable

Im not sure your criteria works. Most of the guns you want to use to stop a bear will not be cheap if its good and not durable if its cheap.

maybe cheap was bad choice of words

want it under $600

From my experience Bears are always going to try to one up you

You'll just tickle a bear with hollow points and not in the good way. They'll just slow down and separate.

Well at least I tried.... lol What else could you carry comfortably while hiking?

glock 20 in 10mm or those .44mag revolvers I mentioned

hollow point are the worst. They are designed to break apart, youre just gonna cause a shallow wound that makes them mad. You want the round to stay together so it penetrates far enough to hit a vital organ.

I would not worry to much about the Arizona wildlife but i have worried far more about some humans and what they might try to get away with in the wilds.......

From what I've read in the hikeaz logs, there have been secluded pot farming incidences. Sometimes in areas you wouldn't think.

Even the last three lost hikers in the superstitions they have not ruled out drug related foul play

I'm not too concerned with the wildlife, either. When I'm out in the desert, I'm usually hunting. On Feb 20, 2011 we were in Peck Canyon in Rio Rico, AZ (north of Nogales). We ran into a situation with 4 drug runners and a big bail of pot. No one could identify if they were armed or not. Luckily, I keep two 30rnd AR mags in my Jeep. I swapped out my 5rnd hunting mag, took high ground and provided cover for my hunting party to move away from this danger zone. Then we called in our GPS location to friend in the Sheriff's Dept, and he fowarded it to the Border Patrol. It wasn't til after we got back to camp that I found out THIS was the area the Border Patrol agent was killed back in December 14, just 2 months earlier.

If I'm with my vehicle, my AR is with me. If I'm on foot, I carry either my Glock 23 40sw with 4 magazines, or my STI 4.15 Tactical in .45acp with 4 magazines.

A Glock in 357sig is equivalent to a .357magnum. If you own a glock in 40cal, you can swap out the barrel for $100 and you're ready to shoot .357sig. As for shooting a bear in the face... good luck. You'll get 1 shot to hit him in the eye and take out his brain. LOL. After that, it's a moving target... and charging right at you!

Ironically, the best small caliber pistol round for a bear is probably a Full Metal Jacket, instead of a hollow point. Bears are thick with muscle and dense with fat.. The hollow points expand too rapidly and can't penetrate deep enough to hit the vitals. Yup, you'll need a Eye Shot. :)

I talked my buddy into buying the Taurus Judge. .410 slugs and 45 Long Colt Hollow points. Nasty combination!
