PHOENIX -- The third "Guns for Groceries" event in Phoenix scheduled for this Saturday is in limbo.
Almost 1,000 guns were turned in during the first two Saturdays of the event and about $100,000 worth of gift cards provided by an anonymous donor were handed out out.
But that was the entire supply.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said the future of this weekend's buyback won't be determined until Wednesday or Thursday.
"We will need some time to prepare for this event," he said.
Martos said they ran out of grocery cards very early last Saturday. They had to turn a few people away while others turned in guns without getting the gift card.
"About 70 people submitted their guns this past week without getting anything in return," he said.
Should the third event does take place Saturday, it would likely be at the Betania Presbyterian Church at 39th Avenue and Thomas Road.
Martos said if the city carries through with Saturday's event, it will likely be the last as Gov. Jan Brewer signed legislation into law that prevents cities from destroying weapons obtained during buy-backs.
That law takes effect 90 days after the legislative session ends.
