Alaska

I put this in OT since it will happen about as fast the con did...

Chris was talking about driving to Alaska in 2 years:

I would take the Dodge. Yeah its a boat and gets crap MPG but it takes a hit like no other and still gets the job done.

What I would want for AK:
37's or 40's m-$1500-2k
Gears $1600 (that's a real quote)
Lockers $400 per end $800
New bigger 3/4 axle out back $300-500 out of a yard
Bumper- 1200
Winch- $600
Lights- $400 BAJA design
Slider/Steps- $600
GPS- $?

That's about 7k worth of stuff.

And about 3k worth of fuel...

Not sure how much thought anyones put into this, but I've done a ton of research on this trip and it will be expensive and require at bare minimum 3 weeks to be enjoyable in my opinion.

Also, I am so down. Probably an August trip i'm assuming?

Not sure what rig I'd be using by that time. I'm pretty sure I'll still have the Ram, but by that time the Tahoe may get traded in for a JK... so we'll have to see.
If I take the Ram I'd put 35s on it, sliders, and that's probably it.. I'd LOVE a locker but no one freakin makes one for my truck. I may look for an aftermarket rear axle that would accept a locker. Front locker is completely out of the question with it being IFS. Or maybe I'll buy a used Rubicon.. Or a Power Wagon... yeah... definitely a Power Wagon..

Bob, I use an old Ipad for my GPS. Big screen, easy to see and read... hooks up to my computer to do route planning etc. Plus an old Ipad is probably cheaper than a new Garmin or something.

What part of Alaska are you thinking? To Anchorage it's like 60 or so hours.

week drive up - week there - week home?

thinking about flying megan and kids out and getting a cabin for the week we are there

i really want to get some pics of the rigs under the northern lights - ive wanted to do that since i first had a jeep, almost 15 years ago lol

Agreed on timeline, will be very tight though I think... long long week of driving there and back. Chelcee and I will plan on camping unless it makes more sense and we can afford a cabin type deal. Honestly though, I don't think I want to stay in a cabin in one spot the entire week i'm there. I'd like to camp in a dfferent spot every night.

YES on northern lights...

Im being serious. If I am driving that far I would like to say that I drove as far as I could north. How cool would that be?

So... to be the party pooper...

I don't have much of a desire to go to Alaska. Strange, huh. There are so many things here in the continental US I still want to explore, plus Mexico and Central America, that I don't think I'll ever make it to Alaska. If I take 3 weeks off, I'll go coast to coast or border to border on backroads first.

Can't wait to see photos and hear stories, though! The friendship time alone is worth it.

(now watch me be the only one to go since I'm the only one who doesn't want to... LOL. Kinda like being the one guy in love with AZ, then moving, right?)

Let's see if she can at least make it to Moab next year first... or even make it out of the LROR parking lot as a "baby step". haha. Then to Arkansas. You know, goals and stuffs.
