Moab Feb 28 - March 3rd 2008
#21
I think some people have this scary trail with fire nymphs and broken glass fields. Moab has everything but that. There are so many options. It's not one trail. How about we post some pics, information on what's out there so we can get over this fear of the unknown.

I'll start with xterra people's pics. That oughta make you feel better already.

I swear every picture taken there is a winner regardless of what the vehicle is doing.

Moab… There is nothing else like it when it comes to wheeling. I know most of you have seen the vids of all the rollovers and flops that come out of there. With as many people that wheel there each year I’m surprised there isn’t more… If we (HG4x4) are going to do this trip I want to see if I can show you the true Moab. The one where you go out in the morning do a run and are back around 2 or 3pm…
As for Jeep requirements… Most of you are more than ready for the trails that HG would want to do. 33’s and lockers are great. Don’t worry if you don’t have a locker it just helps get you a little more stuck. I have seen everything from fresh off the lot Jeeps on 31’s to guys running 40’s on 2” of lift. Your guys wheeling skills more than make up for a lack of locker. I would rather wheel with any one of you than a guy that picked up a credit card Jeep (all ready but no skills).

Parts and tools: This is the most expensive part of the pre trip. Start now and it won’t seem so bad than if you start buying stuff in Jan. This is what I took last time and needed all of it.

U-joints: Get them for the shafts and driveshaft. I had 4 of them and gave away 3 of them to people on the trail that didn’t have any…

D30, 35, 44 shafts: Keep your eyes open for a used set of shaft that will make a good spare set. I had to use a set of the 35 shaft last time. The slick rock grabs like nothing else and D35’s seem to die fast there. If you can’t afford a trail set then see if you can get a set to share or ask you steal a set for a week. I have a set of 30 and 44 shafts that I will be bringing along.

Draglink/ tie rod: I have a slightly bent tie rod that works fine to get people off the trail and down the road. I’m still looking for a cheap draglink set up to use for the trail.

Other: What does your jeep seem to have a problem with in the past? If you know that your jeep seems to kill TSP sensors then bring one. If you know that you have a problem with a fuse burning out… Bring extra.

Tools: Bring tools along. Look up what tools are needed to change a D35 shaft and bring it along. With all the tools that I bring I would have still been SOL (sorry out of luck) when I broke my D35. I didn’t have anything to remove the springs for the locker. With all of us bring tools for the trail we should be covered.
Also plan on bringing along a set of jack stands and a floor jack. This helps when you have to fix something at night before you wheel again. Stuff like this can be left at the camp in a tent or tow rig.

Finally… Pre trip prep: If you know that your rig needs some work (mine always needs it) then get it out of the way ahead of time. If you need brakes and to change the diff fluid take a weekend and do it. If I am free that weekend I will be happy to help.
Spend some time under your rig and check the nuts and bolts, look for cracks in the welds or if parts are at the end of their life.

Now for the other stuff…

Food: They have a City Market in town that has anything you could want or need when it comes to food. I always got a sandwich before the trail and something to drink and was good to go. Also Moab has a bunch of great places to eat if you don’t want to cook. Nothing to expensive.

Camping: I have stayed at the slick rock campground and had a good time. They have hot showers and clean restrooms. If you are looking more at a hotel… I don’t have any info but I’m sure we can find out… Another option is renting a condo… We could fit more people in it and it may be cheaper than a hotel…

If I am able to go I will have my junk on a trailer If you can find a trailer to for your rig I would recommend it. You never know what will happen in Moab and its nice to know that you have a way home.

Next time we get together I will bring my Moab trail book. It has all the trails in and around Moab.

LETS DO THIS!!!!!

condo kinda sounds fun. Just a quick search on it and I found some for around $200 a night that are 3 bedroom 3 bath, with a garage

Im starting to watch ebay and craigslist for spare parts, Ill post up any good deals I find on u-joints, axle shafts and tie rods. I know there is an easy ZJ tie-rod conversion you can do for a TJ too

It'd be better if we were with a larger group that's been there before.
We should stick with Bob. Plus he has all the spare parts ;)

yah, not sure about time off for that yet, other trip was okay since it was weekendish. I know megan cant make it since we are going to Canada in June

Yeah, but if we don't go with him, it seems like we're only talking about 2 Jeeps doing the run. :'(

I will do Moab if it is the weekend run. I can't take off a week of work, but with this much notice, I can fudge a Fri/Mon off. So either way. If we change it to go with Bob (and I agree, we need to go with someone who has been there who can really lead us and make it worth it) and it's a weekday trip, I can't make it. So, when counting heads, that's where I fall. Looong weekend = yes, week day = no.

Just remember in the figuring, it will take two days of driving to get there and back. Your weekend trip just became a lot shorter.
#32
Ah.... my bad. I thought Friday and Monday WERE the travel days. I need to re-plan <grin>. I'm on hold, then. Long weekend's I'm allowed to commit to myself... longer weekends that look like an actual week require the approval of my planning committee (read that as I need to get my wife's permission, because I'm not allowed to be gone from home OR work that long!) LOL
