what would happen if

What would happen if you drilled a whole through the center of the earth and jumped in? Assume you wouldnt burn up in the middle:?:

You would get stuck in the middle. You have gravity to deal with. If gravity was as simple as drilling a hole and not burning up then it must be pushing on all sides of the earth with equal force. Since all things being equal people would get stuck in the middle.

It just better be a big hole if you are jumping in it. LOL

Believe it or not Ive been wondering this exact same question for about 5 years now and I finally found the answer

The traveler accelerates toward the center of the Earth and is momentarily weightless when passing through the geometric center at about 7900 m/s or almost 17,700 miles/hr. The traveler would pop up on the opposite side of the Earth after a little more than 42 minutes. But unless he or she grabs something to hold on, they will fall back for a return journey and continue to oscillate with a round-trip time of 84.5 minutes.

A bunch of scientific formulas and math stuff that made my head hurt back up the claim

So does this put the person in perpetual motion, unless they grab onto somthing as suggested , or is there a bit of a "drop off" after each pass, and eventually they end up just weightless and stuck in the middle?

It would have to be a damped oscillation, and eventually the person in question would stop in the center of the earth.

Rob Gravity pulls it doesn't push. Magnetism however....

Trust me... Gravity pushed my jeep over more than once... ;)

Funny thing is I knew it pulled... I learned that from Brian a few years back.
